History. Kinross Township was established by the Michigan Legislature in 1899 and began as a lumbering town and railroad center shipping wood products; it takes its name from Kinross, Scotland. Kinross Auxiliary Airfield was built in 1943 during World War II, partly to help protect the strategically vital Soo Locks. On July 1, 1952 the field transferred from civil control to the U.S. Air Force as a fighter-interceptor base under Air Defense Command; it later hosted Strategic Air Command's 4239th Strategic Wing with B-52 bombers, declared operationally ready May 1, 1962. On September 25, 1959 Kinross AFB was renamed Kincheloe Air Force Base in honor of Captain Iven Kincheloe, a Michigan-born test pilot. The base closed in 1977; a Base Conversion Authority (1978) managed the transition to civilian use, and the community of Kincheloe grew on the site.
Local economy. Michigan Department of Corrections facilities are the dominant employer, notably Kinross Correctional Facility and Chippewa Correctional Facility on former base land. Chippewa County International Airport reuses former Air Force runways for civilian aviation. An industrial park occupies former hangar and airfield buildings, with tenants such as Kinross Manufacturing and American Kinross. The township owns 900-plus acres of former military property; the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians owns roughly one-third of the Woodside housing area.
Culture and community. The community is served by Rudyard Area Schools. Life centers on the former base, where the Woodside development (about 1,100 units) reused old military housing. Historically a young community, with a 1990 median age of 29.6, shaped by the prison and airport workforce.
What makes Kinross distinct. The 1953 "Kinross Incident": an F-89C interceptor scrambled from Kinross AFB vanished over Lake Superior while chasing an unidentified radar target; pilot Lt. Felix Moncla and radar operator Robert Wilson were never recovered, and the case remains a famous UFO mystery. The abandoned Kincheloe base served as a filming location for scenes in the 1990 film Die Hard 2. The Kincheloe community's nickname "Kinch" comes directly from the base's name. The township is about 30 miles long but only roughly 4 miles wide across most of its expanse.
