La Mesa is a walkable, hilly San Diego suburb about nine miles east of downtown whose civic motto, 'the Jewel of the Hills,' reflects its perch among rolling terrain (its name is Spanish for 'the table' or 'plateau'). Its historic La Mesa Village district, weekly farmers market, and beloved Oktoberfest give it a small-town feel inside the metro area. A surprising early chapter as a silent-film production hub earned it the label 'Hollywood before Hollywood.'

About La Mesa
Also known as. The Jewel of the Hills.
History. Before European settlement the area was home to the Kumeyaay people, and it later fell within the Mexican-era Rancho El Cajon land grant. In 1868 stockman Robert Allison purchased about 4,000 acres from the heirs of Santiago Arguello, developing land around natural springs later renamed the 'La Mesa Springs.' The community was founded in 1869 and the City of La Mesa was incorporated on February 16, 1912. The La Mesa Depot, built in 1894, is the city's oldest building in original form and the last surviving San Diego and Cuyamaca Railway station.
Local economy. Grossmont Center, a roughly 925,000-square-foot shopping mall, is a major commercial hub; it was purchased by Federal Realty Investment Trust in 2021 for about $175 million. The Grossmont Transit Center connects the city to San Diego via the Orange and Green trolley lines. After World War II La Mesa grew rapidly as a suburb, expanding north and west of its old downtown to surpass 50,000 residents by 1980.
Culture and community. La Mesa Oktoberfest, held since 1973, draws well over 100,000 people across three days of German beer gardens, live music and food along La Mesa Boulevard. The 'Back to the '50s' Car Show fills La Mesa Village on summer Thursday evenings. An annual Flag Day Parade has been a community tradition since 1997. The free 'Sundays at Six' summer concert series is held at Harry Griffen Park, and a weekly farmers market runs in La Mesa Village.
What makes La Mesa distinct. From 1911 to 1912, director Allan Dwan produced more than 150 silent films at the American Film Company's 'Flying A' Studios in La Mesa, earning the town the nickname 'Hollywood before Hollywood.' The name 'La Mesa' literally means 'the table' or 'plateau' in Spanish, describing the surrounding terrain rather than any single flat landmark.
