History. First settler Daniel Reader (Reeder) built a cabin on Muskrat Lake, now Lake Missaukee, in 1868. A post office named 'Reeder' opened January 22, 1872. The community was selected as the Missaukee county seat by a one-vote margin in 1873. Renamed Lake City on January 25, 1877. Incorporated as a village in 1889 and became a city in 1932. Grew as a lumber town in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with lumber mills remaining important as the industry matured.
Local economy. Originally a lumber town; sawmills were the early economic engine and mills have continued to operate. Christmas tree farming is a major regional industry, giving the city its 'Christmas Tree Capital' nickname; Dutchman Tree Farms is a large local grower. As lumbering waned the town shifted toward tourism, agriculture, and local commerce. As the Missaukee county seat, government is a civic and employment anchor.
Culture and community. The 'Greatest Fourth in the North' is Lake City's annual July 4th festival, run for more than 60 years, featuring a grand parade, a boat parade and fireworks over Lake Missaukee, a carnival, races, and live entertainment; it is billed as Michigan's biggest Independence Day gathering. Lake City Area Schools serves the community, with Lake City High School. Actor Burt Reynolds spent his boyhood here, his mother's hometown, until about age 10, giving the town a lasting Hollywood connection.
