History. The settlement was first called Four Lanes End, then Richardson's Corner, and was known as Attleborough from about 1737 until 1876; the borough was incorporated in 1874 and renamed Langhorne in 1876. It was renamed after Jeremiah Langhorne, a Quaker who settled in Bucks County in 1684, purchased 7,200 acres in 1724, joined the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in 1726, and served as chief justice from 1739 until his death in 1742. The village grew at the crossroads of two former Lenni Lenape paths that became Maple Avenue (Route 213) and Bellevue Avenue (Route 413), with an early hotel dating to around 1704 and a general store that was among the first trading posts between Bristol and northern Bucks County.
Local economy. Langhorne developed as a stagecoach transportation hub between Philadelphia and Trenton, and by the late 1800s wealthy Philadelphians built homes along Maple and Bellevue Avenues, making it largely a residential community. Cairn University, a private Christian university, sits just south of the borough in the Langhorne Manor / Middletown Township area, and St. Mary Medical Center, a hospital with a Langhorne address, is a major employer serving the 19047 area.
Culture and community. The Langhorne Historic District, also called Attleborough, covers 185 acres and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 20, 1987, with 252 contributing buildings dating from 1738 to 1937 in Federal, Victorian, and Craftsman/Bungalow styles.
