History. Ile Jesus was granted to the Jesuits in 1636, which is the source of the island's name (Jesus Island). The city is named after Francois de Laval, the first Roman Catholic bishop of Quebec and, from 1675 to 1680, seigneur of Ile Jesus. The area grew slowly as an agricultural and limestone-quarrying district before a major post-World War II suburban boom driven by returning veterans and the baby boom. On August 6, 1965 the province amalgamated 14 municipalities across Ile Jesus into the single City of Laval. The Montreal Metro's Orange Line was extended to Laval in April 2007, the first time the metro reached beyond the island of Montreal.

Local economy. Laval is the headquarters of Alimentation Couche-Tard, the global convenience-store operator that owns the Circle K brand. Its diversified economy centers on the technology, pharmaceutical, biotech, industrial and retail sectors. The traditional base of agriculture and limestone quarrying gave way to metallurgical, pharmaceutical and food-product industries, and the city still keeps a working agricultural sector. Culture and community. The Laval Rocket, the American Hockey League farm team of the Montreal Canadiens, was established in 2017 and plays at Place Bell. Place Bell also hosts the Montreal Victoire of the Professional Women's Hockey League. Cultural institutions include the Laval Symphony Orchestra and the Salle Andre-Mathieu performance hall. Centropolis is an outdoor entertainment and dining district, and Carrefour Laval is one of the largest shopping centres in Quebec.

The Cosmodome is the only Canadian museum dedicated exclusively to space exploration and astronautics. Laval waited decades for a subway connection; the Metro finally crossed the river to reach it in 2007.
