About Lincoln Charter Township

Also known as. Home of Stevensville. A Lake Michigan 'Fruit Belt' community.

History. Major Timothy Smith moved from Ohio around 1827 to become one of the earliest settlers within the present township boundaries, and fruit growing soon became the controlling local economy. The village of Stevensville was platted in 1871 by Thomas Stevens, a prominent Niles banker, after the Chicago and Michigan Lake Shore Railroad opened between New Buffalo and St. Joseph in February 1870. Stevensville was officially incorporated in 1894 with a population of about 250. The community of Glenlord was originally named 'Lincoln' in the 1870s, then renamed for Monroe N. Lord, who donated land for railroad development; its post office operated from 1879 to 1905. From about 1900 to 1920, ice cutting on the Grand Mere (Grand Marais) lakes was a major seasonal industry.

Local economy. Fruit growing and orchards long defined the township as part of southwest Michigan's Fruit Belt. Interstate 94 crosses the western portion of the township, supporting commuter and tourist traffic between Chicago and southwest Michigan. Lake Michigan beach tourism and lakeshore residential development are significant, anchored by Stevensville. The Lincoln Township Public Library serves the community as a civic hub. The township's population reached 14,929 in 2020, growing steadily from 13,952 in 2000.

Culture and community. The Bit of Swiss Pastry Shoppe in Stevensville is a well-known local bakery, turning out artisan breads, pastries, cakes, and tortes. The Grande Mere Inn is a longtime Stevensville lakeside restaurant. Lincoln Township Park & Beach offers more than a half mile of fine white-sand Lake Michigan shoreline and is a summer gathering place. Beach-town summer tourism shapes much of the local seasonal culture.

What makes Lincoln Charter Township distinct. The community that was first named 'Lincoln' (now Glenlord) was renamed, yet the township still carries the Lincoln name. Grand Mere's dunes are up to 10,000 years old and earned National Natural Landmark status in 1986. Local crews once harvested lake ice from the Grand Mere lakes as a commercial industry from 1900 to 1920. Lincoln Township Park was a state park before it was donated to the township.
