About Louisville
Also known as. Derby City. Bourbon City. Falls City. Gateway to the South.
History. Virginia militia leader George Rogers Clark established the first settlements at the Falls of the Ohio in 1778, beginning at Corn Island before the settlers moved to the mainland. The settlement was named 'Louisville' in honor of King Louis XVI of France, whose government and soldiers aided the American colonists during the Revolutionary War. The 'Falls City' nickname comes from Louisville's location at the Falls of the Ohio, a series of rapids that forced river traffic to portage and made the site a natural commercial hub. The city's position at the Falls made it a shipping and cargo center from its earliest days, a role it still plays at the crossroads of Interstates 64, 65, and 71.
Local economy. Louisville generates more than a third of Kentucky's gross domestic product and has been the state's economic engine for some 250 years. UPS anchors the metro with Worldport, the company's massive automated global air hub, employing tens of thousands and moving roughly two million packages a night. Health insurer Humana is headquartered downtown and is among the city's largest employers, alongside Norton Healthcare. Manufacturing runs deep, with Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant and Louisville Assembly Plant and GE Appliances' Appliance Park. Louisville is a capital of American whiskey; about one-third of all bourbon comes from the area, and Brown-Forman is headquartered here. Yum! Brands (KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut) is also based in the city.
Culture and community. The Kentucky Derby, 'The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,' runs on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs, preceded by the roughly two-week Kentucky Derby Festival. The Derby Festival opens with Thunder Over Louisville, one of the nation's largest annual fireworks and airshow spectacles. The Hot Brown, an open-faced turkey sandwich under Mornay sauce and bacon, was created in 1926 at the Brown Hotel. Louisville claims the cheeseburger, said to have been created at Kaelin's restaurant in 1934. Whiskey Row downtown and the wider Kentucky Bourbon Trail make the city a bourbon-tourism gateway; the mint julep is the Derby's signature drink.
What makes Louisville distinct. Louisville is the disco-ball capital of the world; Omega National Products has produced the mirrored globes for decades and once made roughly 90% of them, earning the city the nickname 'Glitter Ball City.' Locals famously pronounce the city's name 'LOO-uh-vul,' one of many contested regional pronunciations. KFC founder Colonel Harland Sanders is buried in the city's Cave Hill Cemetery, and Yum! Brands keeps KFC's corporate home in Louisville. Both the cheeseburger and the Hot Brown trace their invention to Louisville establishments.
