John Stronach and his son Adam established the first permanent Euro-American settlement on April 16, 1841, arriving by schooner to build a sawmill at the Manistee River mouth. An 1881 accidental discovery of salt deposits during drilling turned Manistee into a leading salt-producing center, giving rise to the 'Salt City' nickname.
