History. Charles T. Harvey, who had helped complete the Soo Canal, established a community at the mouth of the Manistique River around 1860 and built a dam to power a lumber mill. Manistique incorporated as a village in 1883 and as a city in 1901, and it replaced Onota as the Schoolcraft County seat.
