Maricopa is a fast-growing Sonoran Desert city in Pinal County, about 35 miles south of downtown Phoenix, that has moved sites and names three times over its long history. Once a vital desert watering stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route, it faded when the railroads relocated it, then exploded from about a thousand residents in 2000 to more than 76,000 today after incorporating in 2003. Ringed by mountains and reachable mainly by a single highway named for John Wayne, it blends bedroom-community sprawl with the neighboring Ak-Chin Indian Community's casino and enterprises.

About Maricopa
Also known as. Named for the Maricopa people. Residents are called Maricopans.
History. The settlement has occupied three locations under three names: Maricopa Wells, Maricopaville, and Maricopa Junction (the present site). Established around 1857, Maricopa Wells was an oasis of watering holes and became a key relay station on the San Antonio-San Diego Mail Line and the famous Butterfield Overland Mail Route, peaking as a trading center in the 1870s. Railroad development forced relocations in 1879 and the 1880s; the town's final move east positioned it as a junction of the Southern Pacific and the Maricopa and Phoenix Railroad. The first train departed for Phoenix on July 4, 1887, revolutionizing regional commerce by moving goods by rail instead of wagon. Maricopa officially incorporated on October 15, 2003, becoming Arizona's 88th city.
Local economy. Primarily a commuter/bedroom community for workers who drive north to the Phoenix metro area. The adjacent Ak-Chin Indian Community operates Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino and resort, a cinema multiplex, a public golf course, the Ak-Chin Regional Airport, and an industrial park, drawing customers from Maricopa and greater Phoenix. The desert around Maricopa was cultivated into cotton fields between 1948 and the 1960s, an agricultural chapter in its economy.
Culture and community. Maricopa Stagecoach Days is a multi-day festival celebrating the city's frontier heritage, with a carnival, live entertainment, a Neon Cowboy fun run, and family events. The Ak-Chin Masik Tas festival commemorates the community's formal 1961 federal recognition and celebrates tribal heritage with the public. Copper Sky Recreation Complex (opened 2014) is the civic recreation hub, with a multi-use gym, aquatic center, indoor track, and 45-plus weekly group exercise classes.
What makes Maricopa distinct. Between 2000 and 2010 the population surged roughly 4,080% (from about 1,040 to 43,482), and it reached about 76,654 by 2024, ranking among the fastest-growing municipalities in the country. State Route 347, largely known as John Wayne Parkway, is essentially the only main access route in and out of the city. At-grade railroad crossings once stopped SR 347 traffic more than 60 times a day, prompting construction of a six-lane overpass that broke ground in 2018. The Old West legend Wyatt Earp's associate, lawman Charles Smith, and land once owned by actor John Wayne are part of the area's lore. Despite explosive residential growth, Maricopa remains primarily a commuter city for Phoenix-area workers.
