History. Founded in 1830 by land speculator Sidney Ketchum of Clinton County, New York, and his brother George; incorporated as a village in 1836. The town was named to honor U.S. Chief Justice John Marshall of Virginia, whom the founders admired, five years before his death. Marshall nearly became Michigan's state capital and even built a Governor's Mansion in anticipation, but lost to Lansing by a narrow legislative vote. The Crosswhite Affair (January 1847): more than 100 townspeople rallied to protect Adam Crosswhite, an escaped enslaved man from Kentucky, and his family from slave catchers. The resulting Giltner v. Gorham case (banker Charles T. Gorham was prosecuted) helped push Senator Henry Clay toward the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. Rev. John D. Pierce and lawyer Isaac E. Crary of Marshall designed Michigan's public education system; Pierce became the nation's first state superintendent of public instruction, and their model influenced the 1862 Morrill Land-Grant Act. The Brotherhood of the Footboard, the first railroad labor union in the United States, was organized in Marshall in 1863. Marshall was a national hub of the patent-medicine industry until the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 forced its decline. In July 2010 an Enbridge pipeline (Line 6B) ruptured near Marshall, spilling roughly 840,000-1,000,000 gallons of crude oil into Talmadge Creek and the Kalamazoo River, one of the costliest onshore oil cleanups in U.S. history. In February 2023, Ford and Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the Marshall Megasite would become Ford's BlueOval Battery Park Michigan.

Local economy. Oaklawn Hospital and Medical Group is the city's largest employer. Historically a patent-medicine manufacturing center in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
