Menominee is the southernmost city in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, set where the Menominee River meets Green Bay on Lake Michigan, directly across the water from its Wisconsin 'twin,' Marinette. Once the busiest lumber-shipping center in the United States, it has reinvented itself around helicopter manufacturing, a restored Victorian waterfront, and a scenic Green Bay shoreline. Its name comes from the Menominee people and the Ojibwe word meaning 'wild rice.'

About Menominee
Also known as. The 'M&M' twin cities (Marinette-Menominee). Named from the Ojibwe word for 'wild rice'.
History. The area was the traditional territory of the Menominee people; the city's name derives from the Ojibwe word roughly meaning 'wild rice.' Menominee became one of the great 19th-century lumber towns; between the early 1840s and 1910 it was the biggest lumber-shipping center in the United States. In its busiest year, 1889, the Menominee River Boom Company processed 4,245,000 pine logs. After the timber boom faded, the city shifted to manufacturing wicker furniture and baby buggies using the Lloyd Loom process.
Local economy. Enstrom Helicopter Corporation designs and builds piston (F-28F, F-280FX) and turbine (480B) helicopters in Menominee, a significant local employer. The modern economic base includes shipbuilding, auto parts, chemicals, aircraft and helicopter components, and paper-making. Menominee shares a hospital, newspaper, community foundation, and chamber of commerce with Marinette, Wisconsin, and is part of the Marinette micropolitan area.
Culture and community. The Menominee Waterfront Festival is the city's signature summer event, held downtown along Green Bay. The Menominee Bandshell hosts concerts, art shows, and car shows through the summer. The Menominee-Marinette high school football rivalry, known as the 'M&M Game,' is one of the longest-running in the nation, past its 119th edition.
What makes Menominee distinct. Despite being in the Upper Peninsula, Menominee is the southernmost city in the entire U.P. At its lumber peak it produced more lumber than any other city in the United States. The 45th-parallel cairn actually sits slightly north of the true 45th parallel because of the flattening of the Earth at the poles. William Nolde, the last American serviceman officially killed in the Vietnam War, was from Menominee.
