History. First settled by pioneers in 1836; in November 1836 Obed Marshall purchased 180 acres near present-day Haslett. Organized as a township by act of the Michigan Legislature in 1842, with about 50 residents at the time. Named after the Michigan Principal Meridian, the north-south survey baseline that forms the township's eastern border. Okemos began as the village of 'Hamilton,' platted in 1841 by pioneer Freeman Bray; the Legislature renamed it Okemos in 1857 to honor Chief John Okemos. Chief John Okemos (c. 1775-1858) was an Ojibwe (Chippewa) leader who fought in Tecumseh's War and the War of 1812 and signed the Treaty of Saginaw; the village area was one of his primary camping grounds. Haslett is named for James Haslett, a wealthy Port Huron businessman who moved to Pine Lake in 1887 and promoted a spiritualist community there.
Local economy. A residential and commuter township within the Lansing-East Lansing metropolitan area, closely tied to Michigan State University in adjacent East Lansing.
