About Minot
Also known as. The Magic City. Why Not Minot.
History. Founded in 1886 during construction of James J. Hill's Great Northern Railway. Named for Henry Davis Minot, a railroad investor, ornithologist, and friend of Hill. When the railroad halted for winter, a tent town sprang up almost overnight and the population surged toward 5,000 in about five months, earning the 'Magic City' name. Became a rail junction and trading center serving northern North Dakota and parts of Canada. Minot Air Force Base opened in 1957, reshaping the local economy for the Cold War era.
Local economy. Minot Air Force Base, home to the 5th Bomb Wing (B-52 bombers) and the 91st Missile Wing (Minuteman III ICBMs) under Air Force Global Strike Command, is the largest economic factor. Agriculture and grain trade on the surrounding plains. Bakken Formation oil and energy activity, which drove a population and construction boom. Healthcare, education, and retail serving a large regional trade area, including Canadian shoppers.
Culture and community. Nearly 40% Scandinavian ancestry shapes the city's identity. Norsk Hostfest, held since 1977, is North America's largest Scandinavian-American festival. The North Dakota State Fair is hosted in Minot, with rodeos, carnival rides, and headline concerts. Scandinavian Heritage Park features Nordic replicas and memorials, including a Gol Stave Church replica.
What makes Minot distinct. The 'Magic City' nickname comes from the tent town that grew as if by magic when the railroad arrived. The 2011 Souris/Mouse River flood damaged more than 4,100 homes. During that flood the Roosevelt Park Zoo sat under 8 to 12 feet of water for nearly three weeks, and staff evacuated more than 150 animals over 36 hours with help from zoos nationwide. One air base near Minot carries both nuclear bombers and land-based ICBMs, an unusually large share of America's nuclear deterrent in one place. Minot is North Dakota's fourth-largest city.
