Missoula is a river-laced college town where the Bitterroot and Clark Fork rivers meet at the base of the old Hell Gate canyon. Known as "The Garden City" for its mild climate and "Zootown" to its University of Montana crowd, it pairs Grizzly football and a hand-carved downtown carousel with a national reputation for fly-fishing, wildfire smokejumpers, and craft beer. The valley itself once lay at the bottom of a 950-foot-deep glacial lake.

About Missoula
Also known as. The Garden City. Zootown. The Zoo. Hub of Five Valleys.
History. Began in 1860 as the Hellgate Trading Post, founded by Christopher P. Higgins and Francis Worden, then moved a few miles east to a better mill site that became Missoula Mills by 1865-66. The name derives from a Salish word (rendered as nmesuletkw), meaning roughly "place of frozen water," referring to the river canyon. "Hell Gate" came from French trappers who found evidence of deadly intertribal warfare in the canyon east of town. Became a Northern Pacific Railway division point in 1883, driving rapid growth. Fort Missoula was established in 1877, and the University of Montana was founded in 1893 as the state's first university.
Local economy. The University of Montana is the largest employer and defines the city's identity. Major employers include Missoula County Public Schools, St. Patrick Hospital, and Community Medical Center. Railroading remains significant; Montana Rail Link was long headquartered here before BNSF resumed operations on the line in 2024. The economy shifted from lumber and paper milling, which dominated into the mid-1990s, toward education, healthcare, retail, and tourism. Missoula is a notable craft-beer town, with breweries including Bayern Brewing (opened 1987), Big Sky Brewing, and Kettle House.
Culture and community. The Missoula Farmers Market (since 1972) and the August River City Roots Festival draw big downtown crowds. Film culture runs deep with the International Wildlife Film Festival (since 1977) and the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. Missoula Children's Theatre is based here and tours to roughly 1,000 communities a year worldwide. University of Montana Grizzlies football is a regional obsession, packing Washington-Grizzly Stadium with 25,000-plus fans. Maggotfest, a long-running irreverent rugby tournament, has been held since the 1970s.
What makes Missoula distinct. Around 13,000 years ago the entire valley sat under glacial Lake Missoula, about 950 feet deep over today's university campus; old shoreline benches are still visible on Mount Jumbo and Mount Sentinel. Norman Maclean's "A River Runs Through It," set in the region, helped make western Montana synonymous with fly-fishing. The nickname "Garden City" comes from the valley's relatively mild climate for Montana, historically good for growing fruit and vegetables. Missoula is a smokejumper hub, launching firefighters by parachute onto remote wildfires.
