About Monroe
Also known as. Twin Cities of Northeast Louisiana (paired with West Monroe across the Ouachita River).
History. The settlement began as Fort Miro, built in 1791 under Spanish governor Esteban Rodriguez Miro. It was renamed Monroe in 1820 to commemorate the spring arrival of the steamboat James Monroe, the event locals credited with turning the outpost into a real town. Delta Air Lines was founded in the Monroe area in the 1920s, growing out of a crop-dusting operation created to fight the boll weevil that was devastating Southern cotton. Collett E. Woolman bought the company in 1928 and renamed it Delta Air Service, keeping its corporate headquarters in Monroe until relocating to Atlanta in 1941. Joseph Biedenharn, the first person to bottle Coca-Cola, settled in Monroe, and he and his son Malcolm were among Delta's founders. The city's population was 47,702 at the 2020 census, making it roughly the 8th largest city in Louisiana.
