About Montague

History. The first white settler was Job Sargent, a War of 1812 veteran granted land in the Northwest Territory; his son Nathan built the first cabin on the site around 1850. The village was platted in 1867 by Rev. William Montague Ferry and Anders and Even Knudsen; founder Noah Ferry named it for his father, Rev. William Montague Ferry, who also founded Grand Haven and Ferrysburg. Noah Ferry died fighting for the Union at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863; the Ferry Church was built in his memory in 1874. The first sawmill (the Ferry Mill) was built in 1850; at the lumber-era peak roughly 16 mills operated on White Lake, some cutting up to 50,000 board feet in a single 12-hour day. Lumber milled at Montague helped rebuild Chicago after the Great Fire of 1871. Montague became a fifth-class city in 1935.
Local economy. The 19th-century economy was built on lumber milling (up to 16 mills on White Lake) plus a large iron foundry that opened in 1868 making steam marine engines and mill machinery. A modern aluminum foundry, Whitehall Metal Studios, still casts weathervanes, signs, and yard ornamentation and helped build the town's giant weathervane. Today the economy leans heavily on White Lake boating and shoreline tourism, plus recreation along the Hart-Montague Trail and Lake Michigan beaches.
Culture and community. The Book Nook & Java Shop, a downtown bookstore-coffeehouse, is known for a weekly lineup of live music and events. Cyclists ride the Hart-Montague Trail past cherry, peach, and plum orchards each summer and fall. The city named local writer Richard H. Hoos its official Poet Laureate in December 2020.
What makes Montague distinct. The schooner Ella Ellenwood ran aground north of Milwaukee in October 1901 and broke apart; the next spring part of its nameplate drifted back east across Lake Michigan to its home port of White Lake, which is why the ship tops the weathervane. The Hart-Montague Trail was the first paved rail-trail in the state of Michigan (northern half opened 1989, southern half 1991). On May 3, 1999, a young black bear was spotted wandering through downtown Montague. A 1978 flood dumped more than 7 inches of rain and overflowed Buttermilk Creek into the town. Notable natives include MLB outfielder Ira Flagstead, Miss America 1961 Nancy Fleming, and U.S. Army major general Joseph D. Leitch.
