History. Seymour W. Ensign, from New York by way of Saginaw, is recorded as among the first white residents of the present-day Montrose area in 1842. The township organized in the 19th century as a farming community in northwestern Genesee County within the Flint area. The City of Montrose incorporated separately in 1980, and Montrose Township became a charter township on March 26, 1985; the two are now governed independently. Since November 2017 the community has received treated water via the Karegnondi Water Authority pipeline.

Local economy. Agriculture anchors the local identity, with fruit orchards and blueberry growing central to the township's farm economy. Montrose Orchards, founded in 1913 and in the Hill family since 1926, spans about 150 acres and grows more than 30 varieties of apples, pears, and blueberries. The township functions largely as a rural residential and farming community within commuting distance of Flint. M-57 (Vienna Road) is the main east-west highway artery through the community.

Culture and community. The Montrose Blueberry Festival, launched in 1972, runs the third weekend of August with a carnival, flea market, and parade and celebrates its 55th anniversary in 2026. The festival is a point of civic pride, powered by hundreds of volunteers who have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local causes. Montrose Orchards operates a bakery, cider mill, and pick-your-own seasons that draw families from across Genesee County. Hill-McCloy High School and Montrose Community Schools anchor local sports and community life.
