History. The area was inhabited for thousands of years by the Ojibwe and Noquet peoples, who harvested blueberries and crops from grasslands near Grand Island. Settlement dates to about 1855, when the Munising Iron Company platted an early village; when the company failed the fledgling town struggled to survive. The first post office opened December 22, 1868. The post office was renamed Gogarnville on October 23, 1889, under postmaster Julius Gogarn, a German-born Civil War veteran and the first township supervisor, before the Munising name prevailed. Incorporated as a village in 1896 and as a city in 1915. Iron smelting and lumbering drove the early economy; population peaked at 5,037 in 1920 and stood at 1,986 in 2020. Alger County was created March 17, 1885, and named for lumber baron and Michigan governor Russell A. Alger.
Local economy. Tourism is the modern backbone: Munising is the primary embarkation point for boat cruises to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and to Grand Island National Recreation Area.
