Web Design for Napa, California
Napa is the county seat and largest city of Napa County, the commercial heart of California's Wine Country at the head of navigation on the Napa River. Its name comes from the Patwin word 'napo,' meaning 'house,' and its downtown has transformed from a farm-and-tannery town into a walkable district of tasting rooms, the Oxbow Public Market, and the First Street Napa development. Beyond wine, Napa gave the world nappa leather (invented here in 1875) and hosts the BottleRock music festival each Memorial Day weekend.

About Napa
Also known as. Principal city of 'Wine Country'. Gateway to the Napa Valley.
History. The name derives from the Patwin word 'napo' ('house'); the town was originally spelled 'Nappa' into the mid-1850s. Nathan Coombs laid out the town site in 1847 at the uppermost navigable point on the Napa River, making it a natural trade and transportation hub. Incorporated March 23, 1872; John Patchett opened the area's first commercial winery in 1859. The Napa Valley Opera House debuted February 13, 1880. A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck on August 24, 2014, damaging downtown; the Napa River flooded destructively in 1986 and 2005.
Local economy. Wine, hospitality, restaurants, and tourism define the economy; only about 9% of Napa County acreage is actually planted to grapes despite the global brand. Napa Valley Unified School District (about 1,735 in 2020) and the County of Napa (about 1,209) are the largest employers. Napa Valley College, Costco, and Walmart rank among the top employers. Soft, full-grain nappa leather was invented in Napa in 1875 by Emanuel Manasse at the Sawyer Tanning Company.
Culture and community. BottleRock Napa Valley, first held in 2013 at the Napa Valley Expo, is the valley's first large-scale music festival, pairing headline acts with celebrity-chef food over Memorial Day weekend. Oxbow Public Market, a roughly 40,000-square-foot food hall, gathers oyster bars, taquerias, coffee roasters, and wine merchants downtown. The Napa Valley Wine Train carries diners through the vineyards in restored vintage rail cars. Dawn hot-air balloon flights over the vineyards are a signature Napa activity.
What makes Napa distinct. The soft 'nappa' leather used worldwide in car seats and gloves is named for Napa, where it was first tanned in 1875. Audio company Magnavox traces to Napa: inventors of the moving-coil loudspeaker founded it here in the 1910s. Downtown once had a red-light district concentrated on Clinton Street around 1900.
Napa is the largest city and county seat of Napa County and one of the principal cities of California's Wine Country. Its economy centers on tourism, wineries, restaurants, and a revitalized downtown riverfront.
