Nashua is a former textile-mill city at the confluence of the Nashua and Merrimack rivers, sitting on the Massachusetts line as the 'Gate City' between Boston and New Hampshire. After its cotton mills closed, defense contractor Sanders Associates (now BAE Systems) helped rebuild the economy, and Money magazine twice named Nashua the single best place to live in America. It also has quiet claims to fame: the first racially integrated 20th-century pro baseball team played here, and Russian dressing was reportedly invented in town.

About Nashua
Also known as. The Gate City. Silicon Milly.
History. The area, home to the Nashaway people, was part of a roughly 200-square-mile Massachusetts tract called Dunstable, first settled around 1654 as a fur-trading town. The village took the name Nashua, after the Nashua River, in the 1830s and was incorporated as a city in 1853. The Nashua Manufacturing Company, incorporated in 1823, ran cotton mills employing about 1,000 people and drove decades of industrial growth. The textile industry declined after World War I and the Great Depression, and the last area mill closed in 1949. Sanders Associates, a new defense-electronics firm that later became part of BAE Systems, moved into a shuttered mill and restarted the local economy.
Local economy. BAE Systems (successor to Sanders Associates) is the anchor defense-industry employer. Nashua Corporation, once a major maker of coated papers and floppy disks, was long a signature local company. Technology firms including Dell and Oracle maintain a significant presence, feeding the 'Silicon Milly' nickname. Two regional hospitals, Southern New Hampshire Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital, are major employers. The modern economy centers on defense, high tech, health care and financial/professional services, aided by New Hampshire's lack of state income and sales taxes.
Culture and community. The Nashua Dodgers of 1946 were the first racially integrated professional baseball team of the 20th century, fielding future Hall of Famers Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe. Baseball is still played at historic Holman Stadium, now home to the Nashua Silver Knights of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. Russian dressing was reportedly created in Nashua by grocer James E. Colburn around the 1910s. Downtown Main Street's historic district anchors the city's dining, festival and arts life. Nashua maintains a sister-city relationship with Mysore, in Karnataka, India.
What makes Nashua distinct. Money magazine named Nashua the 'Best Place to Live in America' twice, in 1987 and again in 1997, the only city to top the list twice at the time. The name Nashua comes from a Pennacook word often translated as 'beautiful stream with a pebbly bottom.' A Nashua location served as a Dunder Mifflin branch reference in the U.S. version of 'The Office.' It is the second-largest city in northern New England after Manchester.
