Nashville is the capital of Tennessee and the global capital of country music, a river city that grew from a frontier fort on the Cumberland into a recording powerhouse anchored by the Grand Ole Opry and Music Row. Beyond the neon honky-tonks of Lower Broadway, it is also the nation's healthcare-business hub and an old education center that earned the nickname 'Athens of the South,' complete with a full-scale replica of the Parthenon.

About Nashville
Also known as. Music City. Music City, USA. The Athens of the South. Nashvegas.
History. Founded in 1779 when a party led by James Robertson and John Donelson built Fort Nashborough at the French Lick site on the Cumberland River. Named for Revolutionary War hero Francis Nash, the settlement's name was changed from Nashborough to Nashville in 1784. It grew quickly thanks to its strategic position as a Cumberland River port and, later, as a major railroad center. Nashville became the capital of Tennessee and the seat of Davidson County.
Local economy. Widely known as the nation's Healthcare Capital, with a healthcare industry supporting more than 330,000 jobs across the region. HCA Healthcare, one of the world's largest private healthcare companies, is headquartered in Nashville, alongside Vanderbilt University Medical Center as a top employer. The music and recording industry remains a defining sector, centered on Music Row's studios, labels, and publishers. Tourism, fueled by downtown's music venues and festivals, is a major economic engine.
Culture and community. Country music is the cultural core: the Grand Ole Opry has run since 1925, and the Ryman Auditorium is nicknamed the 'Mother Church of Country Music.' Lower Broadway's 'Honky Tonk Highway' packs live-music bars, including the long-running Tootsie's Orchid Lounge across from the Ryman. Nashville hot chicken is the signature local dish, tied to Prince's Hot Chicken and celebrated at the Music City Hot Chicken Festival, created in 2007. CMA Fest each June turns downtown into a four-day country-music gathering culminating nightly at Nissan Stadium.
What makes Nashville distinct. Centennial Park holds a full-scale replica of the Athenian Parthenon, originally built for Nashville's 1897 centennial celebration. The 'Music City' nickname is often traced to the 1873 European tour of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, after which Queen Victoria reportedly said they must come from a city of music; radio announcer David Cobb popularized it by 1950. 'Athens of the South' reflects Nashville's role as the first Southern city to establish a public school system in the 1800s. RCA Studio B is credited as the birthplace of the smoother, string-and-vocal 'Nashville Sound' that turned the city into an international recording center.
