About New Baltimore
History. The area was first settled in 1796 by Pierre Yax; in 1845 Mount Clemens businessman Alfred Ashley platted 60 acres as the village of Ashley, and a post office called Ashleyville opened in 1851 with Ashley as postmaster. The community was renamed New Baltimore and incorporated as a village in 1867, then incorporated as a city in 1931. Between 1860 and 1880 the town shifted from a manufacturing and shipping community into a popular resort getaway for Detroiters, with an opera house, hotels, salt baths, saloons, a brewery and other resort establishments. In the 1970s the city petitioned to move the county line so that it would sit entirely within Macomb County, having previously straddled the Macomb-St. Clair county boundary.
Local economy. Early industries included the manufacture of barrels, brooms, bricks, coffins, corsets and creamery products. By 1880 the waterfront resort trade -- hotels, saloons and lake recreation -- became a major economic driver. Today it is a residential northern suburb of Metro Detroit with a walkable downtown shopping district, public park and beach on Anchor Bay.
Culture and community. The Bay-Rama Fishfly Festival is the city's signature event: a five-day downtown celebration drawing tens of thousands, with a midway, entertainment tent, Miss Bay-Rama Queen's Pageant, a parade along Green Street and a waterfront fireworks display. The festival was renamed to embrace the annual fishfly (mayfly) hatch that coincides with it, rather than fight the swarms, and is billed as the only fishfly festival in the world; it passed its 60th year in 2025.
What makes New Baltimore distinct. New Baltimore turned a nuisance into a party -- the Bay-Rama Fishfly Festival celebrates the same insect hatch that coats the town in swarming fishflies. Residents literally moved a county line: a 1970s petition redrew the Macomb-St. Clair boundary so the whole city would fall in Macomb County. The original settlement was named 'Ashley' before becoming New Baltimore in 1867.
