Founded in 1834 by Captain Wessel Whittaker of Buffalo, New York, who was shipwrecked on the Lake Michigan coast, admired the natural harbor at the Galien River, filed a land claim, and named his planned town after his hometown. New Buffalo Township was created March 12, 1836, days before Michigan achieved statehood; the village was incorporated shortly after. Chosen as the western terminus of the Michigan Central Railroad; the final tracks were laid in spring 1849 and 200 people celebrated the first train's arrival. In 1853 the Michigan Central extended its line through Indiana directly to Chicago, ending New Buffalo's boom and reducing it to just another stop on the route. The area, originally home to Miami and Potawatomi peoples and later visited by French missionaries, became a city in 1965.
Local economy. Tourism is the primary industry, driven by Lake Michigan beaches and proximity to the Chicago metropolitan area. The Four Winds Casino Resort, owned by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, opened August 2, 2007, creating over 2,000 jobs with more than 3,000 slot machines and 100 gaming tables.
