Web Design for Newark, New Jersey

Newark is New Jersey's largest city and the seat of Essex County, a 17th-century Puritan settlement that grew into a dense industrial and transportation powerhouse across the river from Manhattan. It gave the world container shipping at Port Newark, jazz greats and Whitney Houston, and Portuguese-Spanish feasts in the Ironbound. Bruised by decline and the 1967 unrest, it has rebuilt around NJPAC, the Prudential Center, its airport, and the nation's largest cherry-blossom display.

AppWT works with Newark, NJ businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Newark

Also known as. Brick City. Gateway City.

History. Newark was established in 1666 by Puritan settlers, making it the third-oldest major city in the United States after New York and Boston. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries it became a booming industrial hub producing leather, textiles, and machinery. The 1967 Newark unrest marked a turning point, followed by decades of economic decline and heavy job losses. The 'Brick City' nickname emerged in the 1990s from the brick high-rise public housing projects that once filled the Central Ward.

Local economy. Prudential Financial is headquartered in Newark, alongside Audible (an Amazon company) and Panasonic's North American operations. Port Newark is the birthplace of modern container shipping and part of the busiest seaport complex on the U.S. East Coast. Newark Liberty International Airport is a major regional aviation gateway. The city hosts Rutgers University-Newark, the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Seton Hall Law School.

Culture and community. The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), opened in 1997, is a premier venue and home to the New Jersey Symphony. Newark has a deep jazz heritage, producing greats such as Sarah Vaughan and James Moody, with the tradition continuing in local clubs. The Ironbound district, shaped by Portuguese and Spanish immigrants since the 1940s and '50s, is famed for restaurants like Seabra's Marisqueira and Fornos of Spain. The Prudential Center hosts the NHL's New Jersey Devils, and Whitney Houston was born in Newark in 1963 and sang at New Hope Baptist Church.

What makes Newark distinct. Modern container shipping was born at Port Newark on April 26, 1956, when Malcom McLean's converted tanker SS Ideal-X sailed for Houston with 58 steel containers. McLean later gave away his container patents for free, allowing the whole world to adopt standardized shipping equipment. Branch Brook Park has more cherry blossom trees than Washington, D.C., with roughly 5,000 across many varieties. Newark's University Hospital renamed its pediatric special care unit the Whitney Houston Intensive Care Unit.
