Web Design for Niles, Michigan
Niles sits on the St. Joseph River in far southwestern Michigan, just north of South Bend, Indiana. It is nicknamed the City of Four Flags because France, Britain, Spain, and the United States all controlled the site of Fort St. Joseph at different points over roughly 300 years, the only Michigan community that can claim all four. Today it blends a deep colonial history with a surviving manufacturing legacy led by the 150-year-old French Paper Company.
AppWT serves Niles and the surrounding Michigan area from Livonia, Michigan.
About Niles
Also known as. The City of Four Flags. Four Flags City.
History. French colonists built Fort St. Joseph in 1697 to protect a Jesuit mission established in 1691 on the banks of the St. Joseph River. Control of the fort passed among four nations, France, Britain, Spain, and the United States, giving Niles its Four Flags identity; it was captured on May 25, 1763 by Native Americans during Pontiac's Rebellion, and briefly held by a Spanish force during the American Revolution. The modern town was settled in 1827 and named for Hezekiah Niles, editor of the Baltimore-based Niles' Register newspaper. Incorporated as a village in 1835 and as a city in 1859. From roughly 1820 to 1865 Niles was a stop on the Underground Railroad, aiding freedom seekers heading toward Canada.
Local economy. The French Paper Company, founded in the 1870s and still family-owned, has made specialty paper in Niles for about 150 years and is a signature local manufacturer. Niles has a long light-manufacturing base; the Simplicity Pattern Company operated a large plant on Wayne Street. Its location on rail lines and the St. Joseph River, plus proximity to South Bend, Indiana, shaped Niles as a small industrial and commercial hub for the Michiana border region.
Culture and community. Riverfront Park stretches about 1.5 miles along the St. Joseph River and anchors seasonal events including Riverfest, a bluegrass festival, the Hunter Ice Festival, and the Apple Festival Parade. Musician Tommy James, of Tommy James and the Shondells (Hanky Panky, Mony Mony, Crimson and Clover), grew up in Niles. Satirist, sportswriter, and short-story author Ring Lardner (1885-1933) was born in Niles; a local middle school is named for him.
What makes Niles distinct. Niles is the only place in Michigan over which the flags of four different nations have flown, hence City of Four Flags. Automobile pioneers John Francis Dodge (b. 1864) and Horace Elgin Dodge (b. 1868), the Dodge Brothers, were born in Niles. Aaron Montgomery Ward (1844-1913), founder of the Montgomery Ward mail-order empire, grew up in Niles. The 1892 Niles depot has appeared on screen, including in the films Midnight Run and Continental Divide. The city produced both a rock-and-roll star (Tommy James) and one of America's most influential sportswriters (Ring Lardner).
