About Norman
Also known as. Weather Capital of the World.
History. Settled during the Land Run of April 22, 1889, which opened the former Unassigned Lands to pioneer settlement; incorporated on May 13, 1891. Named for Abner Norman, a young Kentucky surveyor who mapped the area. The University of Oklahoma was founded in 1890, quickly making Norman a college town. Cleveland County, of which Norman is the seat, was named for President Grover Cleveland. African Americans were barred from living within the city until the early 1960s, part of its sundown-town history.
Local economy. The University of Oklahoma is by far the largest employer, with roughly 11,000 employees and about 32,000 students.
