Web Design for North Charleston, South Carolina

North Charleston is South Carolina's third-largest city, born from a U.S. Navy base and shipyard that once employed tens of thousands and now anchored by Boeing's 787 Dreamliner plant and Joint Base Charleston. Its Park Circle neighborhood, one of the country's rare English-garden-style planned communities, has become a food, brewery, and arts destination. Riverfront Park, built on the old naval base, hosts major music festivals along the Cooper River.

AppWT works with North Charleston, SC businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About North Charleston

Also known as. The North Area (the longtime name Charlestonians used for the area). City mottos: 'A great place to live, work, and play' and 'Perseverance - Progress - Prosperity'.

History. On August 13, 1901, the U.S. Navy took formal possession of land including 171 acres of Chicora Park and 258 acres of Marshlands Plantation to build a naval base and shipyard. During World War II the shipyard's civilian workforce ballooned from about 1,632 in 1938 to roughly 26,500 by 1943. The City of North Charleston was incorporated in 1972 and expanded into Berkeley County that March. The Charleston Naval Base and Shipyard closed in 1996 as a result of the 1993 Base Realignment and Closure process, forcing the city to reinvent its economy. In 2010 the former Air Force Base and Naval Weapons Station merged to form Joint Base Charleston.

Local economy. Boeing South Carolina performs final assembly of the 787 Dreamliner in North Charleston, one of only three global sites (with Everett, Washington, and Toulouse, France) capable of building wide-body long-range airliners. Joint Base Charleston supports over 79,000 military and civilian personnel across dozens of commands and agencies. Manufacturing employers include a Mercedes-Benz Vans plant, Robert Bosch (drivetrain components), and Cummins Turbo Technologies. Other large employers have included the KapStone kraft-paper mill (about 1,100 workers) and an InterContinental Hotels Group Holiday Inn reservations call center. The Port of Charleston's terminals in the area handle some of the deepest harbor water in the U.S. Southeast.

Culture and community. The North Charleston Arts Fest is a five-day, largely free festival of dance, music, theatre, visual arts, and literature across venues citywide, running for nearly four decades. The Park Circle district is a walkable hub of restaurants, breweries, and shops centered on a distinctive circular street plan. Riverfront Park and Firefly Distillery host large concerts and the High Water music festival. The North Charleston Farmers Market runs Thursdays from May through October at the Park Circle Pavilion. The area's African-American musical heritage includes the Jenkins Orphanage Band, tied to the roots of early jazz.

What makes North Charleston distinct. North Charleston is the third-most-populous city in South Carolina. Its Boeing plant is one of only three places on earth where wide-body long-range commercial jets are assembled. Park Circle was designed as one of only a couple of English-garden-style planned communities in the United States. The city rebuilt itself around aerospace and the port after the 1996 shutdown of a naval base that had been its economic backbone for most of a century.
