North Little Rock sits across the Arkansas River from the state capital, a blue-collar 'twin city' that wears its old nickname 'Dogtown' as a badge of pride. Founded as the silver-mining town of Argenta, it split from Little Rock in a rare municipal divorce and rebuilt its riverfront around the revived Argenta arts and entertainment district, a World War II submarine, and one of the largest municipal parks in the country. From Arkansas Travelers baseball to the Big Dam Bridge, it packs outsized attractions for its size.

About North Little Rock
Also known as. Dogtown. Argenta. The Twin City. NLR.
History. The area was called 'opposite Little Rock' before the Civil War; the town of Argenta was platted in 1866, its name drawn from the Latin 'argentum' (silver) for a nearby lead-and-silver mining operation. North Little Rock formally organized in 1871 as Argenta and later separated from Little Rock, which had briefly annexed it, adopting the name North Little Rock around 1903-04. The name flipped back to Argenta in 1906 and then to North Little Rock again in 1917. In 2005, under Mayor Patrick Hays, the city opened the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum centered on the USS Razorback submarine. The historic Argenta core has seen major beautification and revitalization since the late 20th century.
Local economy. North Little Rock is Arkansas's seventh-most-populous city, with about 64,591 residents at the 2020 census. Downtown Argenta is an arts, dining, and entertainment hub with breweries, restaurants, and the state's first dedicated wine bar. Simmons Bank Arena, the region's largest indoor venue, draws major touring concerts and events. Revitalized neighborhoods and riverfront development have attracted young families and professionals.
Culture and community. The Arkansas Travelers minor-league baseball team plays at Dickey-Stephens Park on the riverfront. The Argenta Arts District spans walkable blocks of galleries, small stages, murals, and live music. Seasonal events include the winter 'Northern Lights' celebration in Argenta and the Arkansas Reggae Festival at Argenta Green Park. Notable people tied to the city include actress Mary Steenburgen, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, and Green Day guitarist Jason White.
What makes North Little Rock distinct. Local lore says Little Rock residents dumped unwanted dogs across the river, but the 'Dogtown' nickname likely began in the 1870s as a jab at the north side's working-class roots. Little Rock students historically taunted North Little Rock rivals with chants of 'Dogtown' at games. The maritime museum also displays the Navy tug Hoga, a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. North Little Rock has a sister-city relationship with Uiwang, South Korea.
