About Norwalk
Also known as. Oyster Town. SoNo.
History. Founded on February 26, 1640, when Roger Ludlow bought the land from the Norwalke (Naramauke) people; incorporated September 11, 1651. The name likely comes from the Algonquian 'noyank,' meaning 'point of land.' During the Revolution in 1779, Loyalist forces under Major General William Tryon burned most of the town in the Battle of Norwalk. In 1853 the first railroad disaster in U.S. history occurred when a train plunged over an open drawbridge across the Norwalk River. The separate City of South Norwalk and the town of Norwalk consolidated in 1910.
Local economy. In the 19th century oystering and hatmaking dominated; Norwalk became Connecticut's largest oyster producer and operated one of the world's largest steam-powered oyster fleets. Norwalk and Danbury were the hatmaking capitals of America; Crofut & Knapp, founded in 1858, is credited with the first American-made derby (bowler) hat in 1860, and by 1885 twelve hat firms employed over 2,000 people. Modern corporate headquarters based in Norwalk include Booking Holdings, Priceline, FactSet, Xerox, Terex, Datto, and Pepperidge Farm. The Financial Accounting Standards Board and Financial Accounting Foundation are also headquartered in the city.
Culture and community. The Norwalk Oyster Festival, held the first weekend after Labor Day at Veterans Memorial Park, celebrates the harbor's shellfish heritage and funds the Norwalk Seaport Association and Sheffield Island Lighthouse. South Norwalk, known as SoNo, is a walkable historic district packed with restaurants, galleries, and seafood spots. The Norwalk Little League team won the Little League World Series in 1952. The city hosts events including the Norwalk Boat Show and film festivals, and its harbor supports sailing, rowing, and kayaking.

The Norwalk Islands number more than 100 islands scattered across Long Island Sound off the city's shore.
