History. The area was first settled in the 1870s, and Norway was founded in 1877 after a test pit was sunk for the Norway Mine. The settlement was originally called Ingolsdorf and was renamed Norway in 1879. Norway incorporated as a village in 1891 and became a city in 1944. Dickinson County, organized in 1891 from parts of Marquette, Menominee, and Iron counties, was Michigan's last county formed and was named for Donald M. Dickinson, U.S. Postmaster General. The county's growth was driven by iron mining on the Menominee Range, with the nearby Chapin Mine in Iron Mountain among the world's richest producers.

Local economy. The town was built around iron mining, long its main source of income and employment, alongside logging, farming, and manufacturing. The Iron Mountain Iron Mine, an underground tour attraction, sits about 3 miles east in Vulcan and interprets the area's mining past.
