Web Design for Norwich, Connecticut

Norwich is one of Connecticut's oldest cities, founded in 1659 at the head of the Thames River on land purchased from Mohegan sachem Uncas. Nicknamed 'The Rose of New England' since its 1859 bicentennial, it evolved from colonial farming village to seaport to mill town, and counts Benedict Arnold and Polaroid inventor Edwin Land among its native sons.

AppWT works with Norwich, CT businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Norwich

Also known as. The Rose of New England.

History. Founded in 1659 by settlers from Saybrook Colony led by Major John Mason, the Rev. James Fitch and Lt. Francis Griswold, on land purchased from Mohegan sachem Uncas. Co-founder Thomas Leffingwell had earlier rescued Uncas from a Narragansett siege; his family's Leffingwell Inn survives as a museum. The 'Rose of New England' nickname was coined at the 1859 bicentennial when a committee member declared 'Norwich is the rose of New England,' later inscribed on a parade arch. Revolutionary War hub: Norwich supplied soldiers, ships and munitions, and was the birthplace of Benedict Arnold (1741) and home of Declaration signer and Continental Congress President Samuel Huntington. The town and city governments consolidated in 1952.

Local economy. Health care leads employment, with William W. Backus Hospital the largest employer (about 1,895 workers as of 2022). Government is a major employer through the City of Norwich and the State of Connecticut. Bob's Discount Furniture maintains a significant local workforce. Historic economy built on textile and armaments manufacturing served by the Norwich and Worcester Railroad (built 1832-1837). Norwich Public Utilities is the only municipality in Connecticut to operate its own natural gas distribution system. Tourism benefits from proximity to the Mohegan Sun casino resort on nearby Mohegan tribal land.

Culture and community. The Rose Arts Festival, held each June, fills downtown with live music, art exhibits and food vendors. Norwich Winterfest brings a parade, ice skating and holiday activities each winter. The Norwich Sea Unicorns play affordable summer baseball at Dodd Stadium (capacity about 6,270), which earlier hosted AA Eastern League teams. The Slater Memorial Museum on the Norwich Free Academy campus displays an 'Art of Five Continents' collection including the Vanderpoel Collection of Asian Art. Mohegan Park's Memorial Rose Garden showcases over a hundred varieties of roses, reinforcing the city's floral nickname.

What makes Norwich distinct. The first recorded printed use of the word 'Hello' appeared in Norwich's newspaper, The Norwich Courier, on October 18, 1826. Gun-makers Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson partnered in Norwich in the early 1850s to develop an early repeating rifle before founding Smith & Wesson. Edwin H. Land, inventor of the Polaroid instant camera, was born in Norwich in 1909, as was Edith Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt's second wife. The 1963 Spaulding Pond (Mohegan Park) dam failure caused a catastrophic flood, roughly six million dollars in damage and seven deaths, later chronicled in the book 'A Swift and Deadly Maelstrom.' Authors E. Annie Proulx and Wally Lamb and microbiologist Albert Schatz (co-discoverer of streptomycin) have Norwich ties.
