Otsego is an Allegan County city on the Kalamazoo River between Kalamazoo and Allegan whose economy was built on paper. From 1887 into the 21st century a string of mills lined the river, making Otsego part of southwest Michigan's famed 'Paper City' industrial belt. It carries a surprising cultural footprint too, from a pivotal 1863 Seventh-day Adventist health vision to shout-outs in the songs of metal band Static-X.
AppWT serves Otsego and the surrounding Michigan area from Livonia, Michigan.
About Otsego
Also known as. Paper City. Part of the Kalamazoo River 'Paper Valley'.
History. Otsego was established in the fall of 1831 by the Samuel Foster family from Vermont; early settlers Giles Scott and Hull Sherwood first called it 'Pine Creek.' A post office opened in 1832 under the name 'Allegan'; when Allegan County was organized in 1835, Dr. Samuel Foster led the renaming to 'Otsego,' after Otsego Lake in New York (a name of Iroquoian origin). On June 6, 1863, Seventh-day Adventist co-founder Ellen G. White experienced a health-reform vision at Aaron Hilliard's Otsego house, an event credited with inspiring the Battle Creek Sanitarium and later Loma Linda Foods. The Otsego Mineral Springs Bath House drew visitors in the 1870s until about 1887, when George Bardeen's paper-mill operations depleted the mineral springs. Negro league pioneer Andrew 'Rube' Foster played for the Otsego Independents in 1902; a 1918 flu epidemic struck some 800 residents, and a tornado hit in 1962.
Local economy. Paper manufacturing defined Otsego: the Bardeen Paper Company opened the town's first mill in 1887, and by 1907 seven paper mills operated along the Kalamazoo River. The MacSimBar Paper Co. began in 1905, its name an acronym for founders McClellan, Simpson, and Bardeen; by 1918 it produced roughly 250,000 pounds of product in 24 hours. The Bardeen mill was folded into the Allied Paper Corporation (formed 1921) and a major Otsego mill was sold to the Menasha Corporation, which ran a mill in town from 1939 to 2005. Otsego also once hosted the Russell Buggy Company, maker of ironclad carriages. The mills' legacy includes ongoing PFAS contamination cleanup at the former Menasha Paper Mill site on North Farmer Road.
Culture and community. Industrial metal band Static-X repeatedly referenced the town in songs titled 'Otsegolation,' 'Otsego Undead,' and 'Otsegolectric.' The Otsego Creative Arts Festival is held on the last Saturday in September. The city runs a summer 'Summer Fun Activity Series' of food and entertainment through the warm months. Bittersweet Ski Resort, a family-owned ski and snowboard hill open since 1982, sits just outside town in Otsego Township and is regarded as one of southern Michigan's better ski areas.
What makes Otsego distinct. Static-X frontman Wayne Static reportedly used a fake ID claiming he was 'Dean from Otsego' while at Western Michigan University, and later named several songs after the town. A single 1863 vision in an Otsego farmhouse helped launch the Adventist health-food movement that eventually produced companies like Kellogg's cereal in Battle Creek. Five-time B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year and champion bass fisherman Kevin VanDam is associated with Otsego. MLB pitcher Phil Regan, nicknamed 'The Vulture,' hails from Otsego. Otsego was part of a paper-milling boom so intense that southwest Michigan around Kalamazoo earned the nickname 'Paper City'/'Paper Valley.'
