Overland Park is a planned suburban city in Johnson County, Kansas, and the second-largest city in the state, repeatedly ranked among the best places to live in America. Born from a railroad developer's vision of a "park-like" community in 1905, it grew from farmland along the Santa Fe Trail into a corporate and family hub, once home to Sprint's giant world headquarters. Highly rated schools, arboretums, and a children's farmstead define its comfortable, master-planned identity.

About Overland Park
Also known as. OP. one of America's "Best Places to Live".
History. The region sits on the historic routes of the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California Trails; in 1829 Rev. Thomas Johnson (namesake of Johnson County) established an Indian Manual Labor School on the nearby reservation. After a devastating 1903 Kansas River flood, railroad developer William B. Strang Jr. proposed a suburban community on higher ground in rural Johnson County. In 1905 Strang began platting subdivisions along an old military road (now the city's main thoroughfare), naming one "Overland Park" - a blend of his "park-like" vision and the Overland Trail nickname for the Santa Fe Trail. Overland Park was officially incorporated as a city of the first class on May 20, 1960, with a population of 28,085; it has grown to roughly 197,000 residents by 2020.
Local economy. T-Mobile (the former Sprint headquarters) is the city's largest employer; other top employers include the Shawnee Mission and Blue Valley school districts, Johnson County Community College, engineering firm Black & Veatch, and OptumRx. The economy is led by education/health care/social assistance; professional, scientific, and management services; and retail trade. The former Sprint World Headquarters - a 17-building, 3.9-million-square-foot campus on 200 acres now rebranded "Aspiria" - is the nation's second-largest corporate campus after Microsoft's in Redmond. As Johnson County's largest city, it anchors one of the wealthiest and fastest-growing suburban economies in the Kansas City metro.
Culture and community. The Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead, a 12-acre working farm with animals, hayrides, a dairy barn, a 1900s schoolhouse, and a gold-mining camp, is a signature family attraction. A strong public-art and arts scene, with the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art on the Johnson County Community College campus. Historic Downtown Overland Park hosts a farmers' market and clocktower plaza with a statue of founder William B. Strang Jr. The city consistently earns national "best places to live" honors for its schools, safety, and family amenities.
What makes Overland Park distinct. Founder William B. Strang Jr. opened Airfield Park in 1909 with a landing strip, aviation school, and grandstand; the Wright Brothers were among the famous aviators who visited, and Charles K. Hamilton flew an early bamboo-and-silk biplane exhibition there. If the Aspiria (former Sprint) campus were counted as its own city by its workforce, it would rank among the 25 largest of Kansas's 500-plus municipalities. Sprint deliberately built its headquarters low-rise rather than as a tower, on the theory that "communication doesn't happen as well when offices are vertical instead of horizontal." The city's very name fuses a marketing vision ("park-like") with the Overland Trail, so its identity was planned from the first plat.
