Set at the falls of the Blackstone River where fresh water meets Narragansett Bay's tidewater, Pawtucket is where Samuel Slater's 1793 water-powered cotton mill launched the American Industrial Revolution. The mill town later gave rise to toy giant Hasbro and to McCoy Stadium, site of the longest game in professional baseball history. Its official motto, fittingly, is 'Join The Evolution.'

About Pawtucket
Also known as. The Birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution. The Bucket (local colloquialism).
History. Pawtucket, from an Algonquian word meaning 'river fall,' was first settled around 1671 by Joseph Jenckes Jr., who came from Lynn, Massachusetts. Samuel Slater arrived in 1790 and, using textile-machinery knowledge memorized in England, opened Slater Mill in 1793, the first successful water-powered cotton-spinning mill in the U.S. In May 1824 roughly 100 women textile workers walked out over wage cuts, in what is remembered as the first factory strike in U.S. history. Pawtucket incorporated as a city in 1886 and became a prosperous mill town, with a half-dozen movie theaters and two dozen hotels by the 1920s. New England's textile industry collapsed during the Great Depression as mills closed or moved south.
Local economy. Slater Mill made Pawtucket the cradle of American textile manufacturing; the industry dominated the local economy for over a century. Hasbro, the Fortune 1000 toy and game company (Monopoly, G.I. Joe, Transformers), is headquartered in Pawtucket. Legacy industries also included lace, jewelry, silverware, and non-woven textiles. Modern employment leans toward healthcare, retail, and services; the arts have been used as a redevelopment strategy in old mill buildings.
Culture and community. Baseball defined the city for 50 years: the Pawtucket Red Sox played at McCoy Stadium from 1970 to 2020 before moving to Worcester. Rhode Island FC (USL Championship) began play in 2024 and opened Centreville Bank Stadium, an all-electric soccer-specific venue, in Pawtucket. The annual Pawtucket Arts Festival runs each September, and the city has hosted a St. Patrick's Day parade since 1982. 'Beach Boys Way' was designated in 2017 to mark a 1977 Beach Boys concert that drew about 40,000 people. Pawtucket has notable Cape Verdean, Portuguese, French-Canadian, and Liberian communities; Rhode Island has the highest per-capita Liberian population in the U.S., concentrated here.
What makes Pawtucket distinct. McCoy Stadium hosted the longest game in professional baseball history in 1981: the PawSox beat the Rochester Red Wings 3-2 in 33 innings; two time capsules from the game were opened in 2025 on its 44th anniversary. Interstate 95's sharp downtown 'S-curves' were deliberately routed to spare historic buildings from demolition. Pawtucket's sister city is Belper, England, where Samuel Slater trained before carrying Britain's closely guarded textile secrets to America. The first strike in American factory history was led by women, in Pawtucket in 1824.
