Peabody is a North Shore city about 16 miles north of Boston that once tanned more leather than anywhere on earth, earning it the enduring nickname 'Leather City.' Named for the philanthropist George Peabody, who was born here, the city today blends its industrial past with regional retail, healthcare, and technology. Locals pronounce it 'PEE-buh-dee,' one of Massachusetts' classic tongue-twisters.

About Peabody
Also known as. Leather City. Tanner City. Leather Capital of the World (historic).
History. Tanning on the local waterways dates to Indigenous use; the earliest English written record is 1639, when Philemon Dickerson was granted land 'to make tan pits and to dress goat skins and hides.' Originally the South Parish of Danvers, the community separated as South Danvers, then in 1868 was renamed Peabody to honor financier and philanthropist George Peabody (born there in 1795), widely called the 'father of modern philanthropy.' By 1919 Peabody was recognized as the world's largest producer of leather, with 91 establishments dedicated to producing and processing leather; the A.C. Lawrence Leather Company was the largest manufacturer of calf and sheep skins in the world. Peabody was granted city status in 1916. The industry declined after the Depression, a major leatherworkers' strike in 1933, a series of devastating fires, offshoring, and tightening environmental regulations; today only one tannery remains.
Local economy. Modern economy centers on retail, healthcare, professional services, technology, and light industry. Northshore Mall (opened 1958) is one of the region's largest shopping centers and a top employer. Major employers include Analogic Corporation (medical imaging and security-screening equipment), Osram Sylvania, Boston Children's Hospital at Peabody, and Lahey Medical Center. Centennial Park, a central industrial park, has drawn medical and technology companies. A single working tannery still operates, a remnant of the once-dominant leather trade.
Culture and community. The Peabody International Festival, founded in 1984 by Mayor Peter Torigian, is the city's signature event and one of the largest festivals of its kind in the area. The George Peabody House Museum and the Peabody Leatherworkers Museum preserve the city's philanthropic and industrial heritage. Local pronunciation 'PEE-buh-dee' is a point of regional identity and mild amusement to outsiders.
What makes Peabody distinct. Half of old Danvers was renamed in 1868 for George Peabody, a hometown boy who became the 'father of modern philanthropy.' The 'PEE-buh-dee' pronunciation is sometimes attributed to the Peabody family's accent. Its signature mall sits on land once owned by an 18th-century merchant reputed to be among America's first millionaires. Documented leather tanning here stretches back to 1639.
