About Pennsauken
History. Incorporated as a township by the New Jersey Legislature on February 18, 1892, from portions of the now-dissolved Stockton Township. The name probably derives from the Lenni-Lenape term Pindasenauken, generally translated as tobacco pouch. Airport Circle, built in 1927 where Routes 130, 30 and 70 meet, is regarded as one of the earliest traffic circles in the United States.
Local economy. The township's industrial parks include a Pepsi bottling plant and facilities of J&J Snack Foods, maker of the SuperPretzel brand. Commercial corridors along U.S. Route 130 and Route 73 anchor much of the local retail and highway-oriented economy.
Culture and community. Jersey Joe Walcott, world heavyweight boxing champion in 1951-1952, is listed among Pennsauken's notable residents. The Betsy Ross Bridge, opened April 30, 1976 during the U.S. Bicentennial, links Pennsauken to Philadelphia and is described as the first major U.S. bridge named for a woman. Pennsauken Transit Center, opened October 14, 2013, is an intermodal station connecting NJ Transit's River Line light rail with the Atlantic City Line commuter rail.
What makes Pennsauken distinct. The world's first drive-in movie theater opened in Pennsauken on June 6, 1933, on Admiral Wilson Boulevard, using a patent held by Richard Hollingshead. Petty's Island, a 392-acre island in the Delaware River, is part of the township and has hosted nesting bald eagles. The Pennsauken Mart, a large indoor multi-vendor market at Routes 73 and 130, operated about 50 years before closing in January 2006; the Haddon Point apartments were later built on the site.
