Peoria is a fast-growing northwest suburb of Phoenix, founded in 1890 by Illinois settlers who named it for their hometown of Peoria, Illinois. It shares the Peoria Sports Complex, the first spring-training ballpark ever built for two Major League teams, and sits beside the 23,000-acre Lake Pleasant. Once farm country dubbed the 'Rose Capital of the World,' it is now pushing an industrial 'Desert Empire' corridor along Loop 303.

AppWT works with Peoria, AZ businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Peoria

Also known as. Rose Capital of the World.

History. The Peoria townsite was acquired in 1890 by Joseph B. Greenhut and Deloss S. Brown under the Desert Land Act; they named it after their Illinois hometown of Peoria. The plat map was filed with the Maricopa County recorder on March 24, 1897. Peoria's first community Christmas tree debuted in 1921, sponsored by the Peoria Woman's Club and the Chamber of Commerce. The city grew explosively in recent decades, from 154,065 residents in 2010 to 190,985 in 2020.

Local economy. Economic strategy centers on the 'Desert Empire,' a corridor of industrial, commercial, and mixed-use development along Loop 303. An Amkor Technology semiconductor packaging plant is a major anchor, projected to add roughly 2,000 jobs. The largest employment sectors for residents are health care and social assistance, retail trade, and finance and insurance. Spring-training baseball and Lake Pleasant recreation drive seasonal tourism spending.

Culture and community. Peoria co-hosts Cactus League spring training for the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners at the Peoria Sports Complex. Somos Peoria festival showcases traditional Hispanic food, music, and culture. The Arizona Broadway Theatre and Peoria Center for the Performing Arts anchor a growing arts scene. Old Town Peoria hosts Second Saturday markets with local artists, artisans, and musicians.

What makes Peoria distinct. The Peoria Sports Complex was the first spring-training facility ever designed to be shared by two Major League Baseball teams. Peoria was named the 'Rose Capital of the World' in 1956, a nod to its agricultural rose-growing heritage. The city spans two counties, Maricopa and Yavapai, with most of it in Maricopa. It was named after Peoria, Illinois, by its two Illinois-born founders.
