Perth Amboy sits where the Raritan River meets Raritan Bay, a Middlesex County port city that served as a colonial capital of New Jersey and still holds the oldest city hall in continuous use in the United States. Once a bustling ferry-and-warehouse waterfront, it later became an industrial and immigrant gateway and today is a proudly Latino community, especially Puerto Rican and Dominican. Its royal-era mansion and revolutionary firsts give the 'City of Royal Heritage' deep historical roots.

About Perth Amboy
Also known as. City by the Bay. City of Royal Heritage.
History. The Lenape called the point of land 'Ompoge'; the area was settled in 1683 by Scottish colonists as 'New Perth,' named for James Drummond, 4th Earl of Perth, later merged with the native name. Perth Amboy served as a capital of the Province of New Jersey from 1686 to 1776 and was chartered by royal charter in 1718. On November 20, 1789, at Perth Amboy City Hall, New Jersey became the first state to ratify the U.S. Bill of Rights. Ferry service to Staten Island began in 1709 and ran until 1963. Industrialization and immigration in the mid-1800s built its ethnic neighborhoods; it also grew as a Raritan Bayshore resort town before 1990s redevelopment.
Local economy. Historically a working port with warehouses, markets, and docks along a busy waterfront business center. The Industrial Revolution drew manufacturing and a diverse immigrant workforce. Once a bayshore resort destination, the city has diversified through redevelopment beginning in the 1990s. The law firm Wilentz, Goldman & Spitzer traces its roots to David T. Wilentz's 1919 practice in Perth Amboy and grew into one of New Jersey's largest firms.
Culture and community. Perth Amboy has one of the highest concentrations of Puerto Rican residents on the U.S. mainland (about 27.79% identified Puerto Rican ancestry in 2000, fifth-highest among municipalities with 1,000+ such residents). Hall Avenue anchors a traditional Puerto Rican neighborhood and the annual Puerto Rican Day Festival, timed to New York City's parade. The Perth Amboy Dominican Festival is held on the waterfront, alongside a summer Carnival and Fun Fair along Sadowski Parkway. Rocker Jon Bon Jovi (born John Francis Bongiovi Jr., 1962) is the city's most famous native.
What makes Perth Amboy distinct. Thomas Mundy Peterson voted at Perth Amboy on March 31, 1870, and is recognized as the first African American to cast a ballot under the 15th Amendment; New Jersey marks March 31 as Thomas Mundy Peterson Day. The city's royal governor was Benjamin Franklin's own son, who remained a Loyalist while his father backed the Revolution. Its city hall has been in continuous municipal use for more than three centuries. New Jersey ratified the Bill of Rights first, and did so inside this building.
