History. The name comes from the Ojibwe/Chippewa 'Opinikaaning' (rendered 'O-pin-nic-con-ing'), meaning 'potato place.' Founded in 1872 as a lumber settlement on the Pinconning River by George VanEtten and Henry Kaiser; a post office opened January 29, 1873, and the village was platted that year. Home to what is described as Michigan's first logging railroad, the Pinconning & Kaiserville Railroad (1873), an approximately 11-mile private line running to a logging outpost called Kaiserville. Incorporated as a village in 1887 and as a city in 1935; downtown streets are named for founders VanEtten and Kaiser. As nearby forests were cut over, the lumber economy declined and the area shifted to dairy farming. William Reid established the Pinconning Creamery in 1907, beginning the town's dairy era.
Local economy. Cheese production and cheese retail are the town's signature identity, drawing visitors along the I-75 corridor. German immigrant Daniel Horn, arriving from Wisconsin, developed Pinconning cheese, a Colby-style cheese that could be stored and aged at warmer temperatures; his family settled in 1915. Kraft operated a cheese plant in Pinconning from 1936 to 1993. Wilson's Cheese Shoppe, founded in 1939 by Horn's daughter Inez Wilson, is cited as Michigan's oldest cheese shop; the Pinconning Cheese Co. & Fudge Shoppe also serves the trade. Originally a lumber-and-sawmill economy in the 1870s-1880s before the timber ran out.
