Pittsfield Charter Township is a fast-growing suburban township of nearly 40,000 people that hugs the south and east sides of Ann Arbor in Washtenaw County, making it the county's third-largest municipality. Founded as farm country and named for British statesman William Pitt, it has shifted to a service-and-manufacturing economy dominated by education and health-care jobs. Its rural roots survive at the six-generation Sutherland-Wilson Farm, now a township history museum.

AppWT serves Pittsfield Charter Township and the surrounding Michigan area from Livonia, Michigan.

About Pittsfield Charter Township

History. George W. Noyes made the first federal land purchase in the area around 1824, drawing settlers from New York, Pennsylvania and New England to farm. The land was part of Ann Arbor Township (organized 1827) before being established as the 'Township of Pitt' on March 7, 1834, by the Michigan Territorial Council; the name (suggested by Ezra Carpenter) honored British statesman William Pitt. Renamed Pittsfield Township by the Michigan Legislature in 1839. McCracken School, the county's first school, was built in Pittsfield in 1825; the Toledo & Ann Arbor Railroad was built through the township in 1878. Residents approved charter-township status in 1972, granting greater home-rule authority.

Local economy. Suburban community adjacent to Ann Arbor; the top employment sectors for residents are educational services, health care and social assistance (about 35% of jobs), followed by manufacturing (about 14%). Third-largest municipality in Washtenaw County, home to nearly 40,000 people. Population steadily grew, more than doubling between 1980 and 2000.

Culture and community. The annual Pittsfield Township Harvest Festival at the Historic Sutherland-Wilson Farm features historic house and building tours, a petting farm, hay rides, historic carriage photos, lawn games and face painting. The local group Fiddlers ReStrung has performed to support the Sutherland-Wilson Farm. The Ann Arbor District Library opened a Pittsfield branch in 2006.

What makes Pittsfield Charter Township distinct. Ann Arbor Municipal Airport (built 1928) sits inside Pittsfield Township but is owned and operated by the City of Ann Arbor, which annexed the land for water rights before Pittsfield became a charter township in 1972; about 15% of Ann Arbor's treated water comes from wells at the airport. The township is named for a British prime minister, William Pitt, who never set foot in America. The Sutherland-Wilson Farm has been designated a Centennial and Sesquicentennial Farm, listed on the National Register of Historic Places (2006), and named Michigan Barn of the Year (2007).
