Web Design for Pittsfield, Massachusetts

Pittsfield is the largest city and county seat of Berkshire County, the commercial and cultural hub of the Berkshires in far-western Massachusetts. Once a General Electric company town, it now bills itself as a "City of Festivals" with a nationally ranked arts scene, and it carries two remarkable claims to fame: Herman Melville wrote Moby-Dick here, and a 1791 town bylaw holds the earliest known American reference to "baseball."

AppWT works with Pittsfield, MA businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Pittsfield

Also known as. "City of Festivals," for its dense calendar of arts and cultural events. The commercial and geographic "hub of the Berkshires".

History. The Mohican (Algonquian) people inhabited the area until the early 18th century. Settled in 1752 as the Pontoosuc Plantation, it was incorporated as a town and made the county seat in 1761, named for British Prime Minister William Pitt. Abundant waterpower drove a shift from farming to industry in the early 19th century, first in textiles and later in electrical manufacturing. In 1886, inventor William Stanley Jr. demonstrated a practical alternating-current transformer in Pittsfield, a breakthrough enabling long-distance electricity distribution. General Electric arrived in 1903 by buying the Stanley Electric Manufacturing Company and became the city's dominant employer for most of the 20th century.

Local economy. For decades GE's transformer, plastics, and defense (Ordnance) divisions anchored the local economy and employed thousands. The economy is now diversified across plastics manufacturing, health care, business services, and insurance. Berkshire Health Systems / Berkshire Medical Center is a major regional employer and health-care hub. The wider Berkshires tourism economy -- museums, theaters, and nearby Tanglewood -- feeds business into the city as the region's commercial center.

Culture and community. In 2017 the Arts Vibrancy Index (National Center for Arts Research) ranked Pittsfield and Berkshire County the #1 medium-sized community in the nation for the arts. The gilded-age Colonial Theatre (1903) reopened in 2006 after a roughly $21 million restoration and is now part of the Berkshire Theatre Group. Downtown hosts Barrington Stage Company, the Berkshire Museum, and the Berkshire Athenaeum, plus lively "Third Thursday" summer street festivals. The surrounding Berkshires include Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and author Edith Wharton's estate The Mount.

What makes Pittsfield distinct. A 1791 Pittsfield bylaw banning anyone from playing "baseball" within 80 yards of the new meeting house is the earliest known written reference to the game in America -- rediscovered by historian John Thorn in 2004. Wahconah Park is one of only two U.S. professional ballparks that face west, so games there are occasionally halted for "sun delays" until the sun drops out of the batters' eyes. Melville's Moby-Dick is said to have been inspired partly by winter views from his study of nearby Mount Greylock, whose snowy profile resembles a great white whale. GE discharged an estimated 600,000-plus pounds of PCBs into the Housatonic River (c. 1932-1977); the plant and river were designated an EPA Superfund site in 1997. GE's future CEO Jack Welch began his career at the Pittsfield plastics operation; the city was also a residence at various times for writers including Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.
