Port Huron Charter Township is a suburban township of roughly 10,800 people wrapping the south and west edges of the city of Port Huron in Michigan's Blue Water Area at the base of the Thumb. Often confused with its namesake city, the township predates Michigan statehood and includes the small communities of South Park and Tappan.

About Port Huron Charter Township

History. Organized April 12, 1827 by the Michigan Territorial Legislature -- a full decade before Michigan became a state -- out of the sprawling early Desmond/St. Clair township region. The surrounding Black River corridor drove early industry, including one of Michigan's first steam-powered sawmills, opened along the river in the early 1830s. The neighboring city of Port Huron was formed in 1837 from the merger of several villages and chartered as a city in 1857; the township remained the separate, more rural jurisdiction around it. Recorded a population of 10,792 at the 2020 census.

Local economy. Serves as a residential and commercial township within the greater Port Huron / Blue Water Area economy of St. Clair County. Benefits from proximity to the I-94 and I-69 freeway corridors and the Blue Water Bridge international crossing to Sarnia, Ontario in the adjacent city. Maintains a township Downtown Development Authority to guide commercial corridor development.

Culture and community. Township parks anchor local recreation, with softball diamonds, ponds, pavilions, and a new outdoor fitness court. Residents share in the broader Blue Water Area identity built around Lake Huron, the St. Clair River, and the region's maritime and boating heritage.

What makes Port Huron Charter Township distinct. The township is frequently mistaken for the separate, adjacent city of Port Huron -- the two are distinct governments. It was organized in 1827, ten years before Michigan joined the Union in 1837. Its two named settlements, South Park and Tappan, are unincorporated communities rather than separate towns.
