History. The area was originally home to the Potawatomi and was long avoided by westward settlers who believed its wetlands were an uninhabitable, uncultivable swamp. Settled around 1830 and named for the portage route through the area. Dutch immigrants and other later settlers discovered the rich muck soil was perfect for celery, and by the 1880s the area had become a national celery-growing center. In 1948 the Upjohn pharmaceutical company (later part of Pfizer) moved its manufacturing to the township -- a decisive event for the future city. Incorporated as a city in 1963. On May 7, 2024, a high-end EF2 tornado struck Portage, destroying more than 60 buildings and damaging 500-plus structures, including a FedEx distribution center.
Local economy. Pfizer operates its largest manufacturing facility in Portage -- about 1,300 acres -- where COVID-19 vaccine doses were prepared for national distribution. Stryker Corporation, the health-technology and medical-device maker, has been headquartered in Portage since 2023 and runs multiple local manufacturing plants.
