Web Design for Portland, Michigan
Portland sits in Ionia County at the confluence of the Grand River and the Looking Glass River, which is exactly why it is called the City of Two Rivers. A historic railroad and mill town of about 3,800 people midway between Grand Rapids and Lansing, it wraps an eight-mile riverwalk and a string of vintage bridges around a compact Victorian-era downtown. In June 2015 an EF-1 tornado tore through that same historic core, damaging churches and homes along Bridge Street.

About Portland
Also known as. City of Two Rivers. Town on Two Rivers.
History. The first land in the area was claimed in 1833 by Elisha Newman, and Philo Bogue built a trading post on the Grand River that same year. Around 1836 settlers met to name the town; among suggestions like Boguetown, Boyerville, Jamestown, and Newmanville, 'Portland' won, referring to the ports on its two rivers. The first post office opened in 1837. The first train arrived in 1869 via the Pere Marquette Railway, and the community incorporated as a village that year; an 1881 railroad bridge still stands. An opera house opened in 1880 and a Carnegie library in 1905. Portland incorporated as a city in 1969; the last train left in 1984 when the tracks were removed.
Local economy. Portland Products, founded in 1947 by Walt Sprague, employs around 100 people making stampings and assemblies for the automotive, heavy-truck, and off-road industries. Portland Products' acquisition by West Michigan residents was named Crain's Detroit Business 2025 Manufacturing Deal of the Year. Its location on Interstate 96 between Grand Rapids and Lansing makes it a convenient stop for dining, fuel, and shopping. A historic railroad hub that once received up to six passenger trains per day by 1881. A compact historic downtown along Bridge Street anchors local retail and services; the Portland Beacon is the local newspaper. Surrounded by Ionia County farmland.
Culture and community. HolidayFest on the Grand fills downtown with a lighted holiday parade, carriage rides, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and a 'snowball drop' prize hunt at local merchants. Two Rivers Park features a band shell used for outdoor concerts, fronting both the Grand and Looking Glass rivers. River recreation, including kayaking and fishing at the two-river confluence. Preserved civic landmarks such as the 1880 opera house and 1905 Carnegie library reflect a strong local-history identity.
What makes Portland distinct. The city's name reportedly came from a boy's whisper: Abram Hixson prompted his grandfather Abner to propose 'Portland' at the naming meeting. An EF-1 tornado on June 22, 2015 packed winds up to 112 mph, damaged 70-plus homes and a dozen commercial buildings, and tore part of the roof off the 101-year-old Portland United Methodist Church. In December 1869 railroad workers rioted over unpaid wages, prompting the town's saloons to adopt closing hours instead of running around the clock. Chief John Okemos reportedly lived in the area in the 1850s. Riverwalk-connected trail mile markers count distance from Saginaw, a leftover of the old railroad line. Notable people from Portland include writer Clarence Budington Kelland and U.S. Representative Kristen McDonald Rivet.
