Web Design for Quebec City, Quebec

Perched on the cliffs of Cap Diamant above the St. Lawrence River, Quebec City is the oldest French-speaking city in North America and the only fortified city north of Mexico. Its cobblestone Old Town, copper-roofed Chateau Frontenac, and near-total French-speaking population give it the feel of a walled European capital transplanted onto the continent. Founded in 1608, it is the cradle of French civilization in the Americas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

AppWT works with Quebec City, QC businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Quebec City

Also known as. Cradle of New France (Berceau de l'Amerique francaise). La Vieille Capitale (The Old Capital). The only walled/fortified city north of Mexico.

History. Founded July 3, 1608 by explorer Samuel de Champlain as a fur-trading post; the name comes from an Algonquian word meaning 'where the river narrows.' Served as the capital of New France and the birthplace of French Canada. The 1759 Battle of the Plains of Abraham saw British forces defeat the French, a turning point in the Seven Years' War that led to British control of the colony. Enjoyed a major economic boom in the early 19th century during the Napoleonic Wars, when Britain turned to its colonies for timber, making Quebec City one of the foremost ports in North America. Old Quebec was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 as the birthplace of French Canada and the only fortified city north of Mexico.

Local economy. Provincial capital and seat of Quebec's National Assembly; the provincial government is a major employer. Nicknamed the 'Insurance Capital' of Canada, with roughly 10 insurance and financial-services corporate headquarters, second only to Toronto nationally. Tourism draws roughly 5 million visitors a year, supported by a deepwater port on the St. Lawrence. Described as one of the fastest-growing large metropolitan economies in Canada, with growing high-tech industries.

Culture and community. About 97% of residents speak French as their language at home, the highest of any major North American city. Home to the Quebec Winter Carnival (Carnaval de Quebec), held annually since 1955 and the largest winter festival in the Western Hemisphere, drawing about one million visitors. Bonhomme Carnaval, a seven-foot snowman in a red toque and arrowed sash (ceinture fleche), is the festival's beloved mascot. Traditions include drinking 'caribou' (a sweet spiked drink), ice-canoe races across the partly frozen St. Lawrence, and Quebecois cuisine such as poutine.

What makes Quebec City distinct. It is the only walled/fortified city remaining north of Mexico. The name 'Quebec' comes from an Algonquian word meaning 'where the river narrows.' During Winter Carnival, five-person crews run and paddle large canoes across the ice floes of the mile-wide, mostly frozen St. Lawrence River. Its Chateau Frontenac is frequently cited as the most photographed hotel on Earth.
