History. The settlement was first called Bingen and stood about three miles west of the present site, near a sawmill. It relocated to the current location in 1869 to sit on the Detroit, Lansing and Northern Railroad line. A post office named Bingen was established July 20, 1877, with Christian W. Wernette as the first postmaster. The post office was renamed Remus on March 15, 1880, after William John Remus, a landowner who had surveyed the area. The Wheatland Music Festival began August 24, 1974, as a one-day bluegrass benefit for the Mt. Pleasant Food Co-Op on the Rhode family farm four miles east of Remus on M-20.
