Web Design for Riverton, Utah

Riverton lies in the southwest corner of the Salt Lake Valley, named for its position along the Jordan River that irrigated its early farms. Settled by Mormon pioneers in the mid-1850s, it spent a century as a quiet agricultural community before booming into a fast-growing Salt Lake City suburb after the 1970s. Its long-running Town Days rodeo and Independence Day celebration remain a defining local tradition.

AppWT works with Riverton, UT businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Riverton

Also known as. Gardnerville / Gardnersville (the settlement's original name before 1879).

History. First settled by people of European descent in the mid-1850s; Archibald Gardner may have been the first to settle the land, and the town was originally called Gardnerville. A judicial precinct was established in 1879, when Judge Charles Smith officially changed the settlement's name from Gardnersville to Riverton. Early growth was slow due to lack of irrigation water until three canals (including the South Jordan Canal completed in 1876 and the Utah and Salt Lake Canal finished in 1881) brought Jordan River water to the benchlands. The Salt Lake and Utah Railroad ran through Riverton from 1914 to 1945 as a commuter and freight line; a major fire destroyed the town school on July 30, 1926. Riverton incorporated in 1947; its population tripled from 2,820 in 1970 to roughly 10,000 by the mid-1980s, and reached 45,285 in the 2020 census.

Local economy. Historically an agricultural economy producing alfalfa, sugar beets, tomatoes, and wheat, plus sheep, dairy cows, and poultry, supported by an alfalfa feed mill, canning factory, and dairy cooperative. Intermountain Riverton Hospital, which opened in November 2009, is a major current employer. The Jordan School District is a significant local employer. Today the city functions largely as a residential suburb within the broader Salt Lake County economy of trade, manufacturing, services, and finance.

Culture and community. Riverton Town Days is an annual Independence Day celebration that has run for well over half a century, featuring a rodeo, parade, carnival, chuckwagon breakfast, movie in the park, bingo, children's contests, and fireworks. The Riverton Town Days Rodeo is a three-day event held at the Riverton Rodeo Arena, known regionally as one of the best local rodeos, with flag skydivers and 'cash cow' events for kids. The community has deep Latter-day Saint (Mormon) pioneer roots, reflected in its young median age (about 32) and high share of married-couple households.

What makes Riverton distinct. Riverton was originally named 'Gardnerville' after pioneer Archibald Gardner before a judge renamed it in 1879. The town's early growth stalled for years simply because there was not enough irrigation water until settlers dug three canals from the Jordan River. Riverton's population roughly tripled in a single generation (1970s-1980s) as farmland gave way to suburban subdivisions.
