History. Began as the small farming settlement of Big Lick; renamed Roanoke on February 3, 1882 after the Norfolk & Western Railway chose it as its headquarters. Incorporated as an independent city on January 31, 1884 once its population passed 5,000. Population exploded from under 700 in 1880 to over 16,000 by 1890, earning the nickname 'Magic City' for its overnight boom. The Hotel Roanoke, a 330-room Tudor Revival hotel nicknamed the 'Grand Old Lady,' was built by the N&W in 1882. In an 1893 outbreak of racial violence, a mob lynched prisoner Thomas Smith and wounded Mayor Henry S. Trout, who had tried to protect him. Crossed the 100,000 population mark in 2020 for the first time since 1980.

Local economy. Railroads defined the city; the N&W merged in 1982 to form Norfolk Southern, and the historic Roanoke locomotive shops finally closed in May 2020. Carilion Clinic is the largest employer in the Roanoke Valley with more than 13,200 employees and contributed about $3.2 billion to Virginia's economy in 2018. The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute anchors a growing biomedical and health-sciences sector downtown. A fast-growing craft-beer microeconomy has produced more than 14 area breweries; regional manufacturing includes Yokohama Tire and nearby Volvo/Mack Trucks operations.

Culture and community. Texas Tavern, a 10-stool greasy spoon open since 1930, is a civic institution famous for its chili and 'Cheesy Western' burger. The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra (founded 1953) and Opera Roanoke (1976) headline the performing-arts scene. Signature events include Local Colors, Dickens of a Christmas, a large St. Patrick's Day parade, and the Blue Ridge Marathon, billed as 'America's Toughest Road Marathon.' The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs play professional hockey in the SPHL at the Berglund Center. The Historic Roanoke City Market is the oldest continuously operating open-air market in Virginia, dating to 1882.

What makes Roanoke distinct. From 1957 until 1976, the Mill Mountain Star turned from white to red for two nights whenever there was a traffic fatality in the city. The star can also shine red, white, and blue for patriotic holidays. Roanoke is the largest metropolitan area on the Blue Ridge Parkway and sits along the Appalachian Trail corridor. Julius 'Dr. J' Erving played his 1971-72 rookie season with the ABA's Virginia Squires, a team that split its home games among several Virginia cities including Roanoke.
