Web Design for Rock Hill, South Carolina
Rock Hill is York County's largest city, a fast-growing Charlotte-region neighbor that calls itself "Football City USA" for the remarkable number of NFL players it produces. It carries a serious civil-rights legacy through the Friendship Nine, who pioneered the "jail, no bail" sit-in strategy in 1961, and it has reinvented itself around the Riverwalk sports district and Winthrop University. The Catawba Indian Nation, South Carolina's only federally recognized tribe, is based just outside town.

About Rock Hill
Also known as. Football City USA. Gateway to South Carolina. Always On Top (city motto).
History. Grew from an 1852 depot and watering stop on the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad; the name came from a flinty knoll noted on a surveyor's map. Planter Alexander Templeton Black let the railroad cross his land and is considered a founding figure of the town. Rechartered as a city in 1892 and won the new Winthrop Normal and Industrial College, which opened in Rock Hill in 1895. Home to the Rock Hill Cotton Factory (1880), reported as the first steam-driven cotton mill in South Carolina, anchoring a textile economy that dominated for decades. In 1961 the Friendship Nine were jailed after a McCrory's lunch-counter sit-in; a judge vacated their convictions 54 years later, on January 28, 2015.
Local economy. Winthrop University is a central employer and civic anchor. 3D Systems, a pioneer in 3D printing, is headquartered in Rock Hill. Manufacturing employers include Hyosung and Atlas Copco, and Comporium Communications is a major local telecom. The economy shifted after the late-20th-century collapse of textiles toward technology, services, finance, and heritage tourism. Proximity to Charlotte, North Carolina, makes Rock Hill a substantial commuter city and growth market.
Culture and community. The springtime Come-See-Me Festival is the city's signature annual event. Other events include a Blues and Jazz Festival and the ChristmasVille holiday celebration. Downtown's public-art scene includes the Mural Mile, with work by artist Shepard Fairey. Winthrop University Eagles compete in NCAA Division I athletics. Rock Hill's football pipeline has produced NFL standouts such as Jadeveon Clowney, Stephon Gilmore, Cordarrelle Patterson, and Mason Rudolph.
What makes Rock Hill distinct. Rock Hill is often credited with producing more NFL players per capita than any other U.S. city, the basis of the "Football City USA" nickname. Vernon Grant, creator of Kellogg's Rice Krispies mascots Snap, Crackle and Pop, was a longtime Rock Hill resident. The Friendship Nine's 1961 "jail, no bail" stand became a national model for civil-rights protest tactics. The town exists because nearby Ebenezerville residents rejected the railroad as too dirty and noisy, pushing the line to the rocky hill instead.
